Peter knew how to be brave. Even when the odds were against him, he was the kind of guy who would stand up to anything or anyone.
It was the same night Tracy had broken up with him. Peter was on his way home, excited to draw a new chapter of his manga, when he heard someone screaming. A woman. He followed her cries into the graveyard, which separated the dorms. It was common for people to hop the fence as a shortcut home late at night. It was the route Tracy usually took.
He wasnât sure it was her until he saw her lying in the grass. Tracy was being held down by four guys as a fifth was trying to remove her pants. She kicked and screamed, but they only laughed at her efforts.
They outnumbered him five to one, each of them twice Peterâs size, but he couldnât let that frighten him. He had to do something. He had to stop them.
âDoes anyone have a cigarette?â Peter said, as he stepped out of the shadows toward the five men. âI could really use a cigarette right now.â
All of them froze when they saw him. Even Tracy, with her pants down to her knees, was surprised.
âWho the fuck is this guy?â one of the guys said.
Peter didnât recognize any of them. They were around his age, but they didnât appear to be students at the college.
âPeter!â Tracy yelled. âCall the police!â
One of them put his hand over her mouth. As she struggled in their grasp, the guy who was trying to pull off her pants stood up and approached Peter. Two of his friends followed.
âYou two know each other?â the guy asked.
Peter nodded. âYeah. She used to be my girlfriend, but we broke up a little while ago.â
âSo what are you trying to do? Save her or something? Think you can win her back by playing the hero?â
âNah,â he said, shaking his head. âAs I said, I was just wondering if any of you had a cigarette I could bum.â
Tracy pulled her face away from the guy restraining her and said, âWhat the fuck are you doing, Peter? Run! Call the Police!â
The guys all laughed at her.
âYeah, Peter,â said the leader, cocking his head. âRun. Call the police.â
Peter looked at Tracy then up at the guy standing in his face. He smiled.
âCanât,â Peter said. âI donât have a cell phone.â
They laughed at him.
âThen what good are you?â he said.
The guy pulled a cigarette out of his pack and handed it to Peter.
âHereâs your cigarette,â the guy said. âNow get lost.â
Peter took the cigarette then gave it back.
âCan you light it?â Peter asked. âI donât have a lighter.â
It made the guy smirk. He lit Peterâs cigarette for him and handed it back to him.
âYouâd be dead right now, if I didnât find all of this so amusing,â the leader said.
Peter held the cigarette in his hands and just stood there, staring at the men with a smile on his face.
âArenât you going to smoke it?â the leader asked.
